ST JOHN'S UNITED CHURCH

Christian Development Committee. Our members meet each month (except July and August) to coordinate educational opportunities for the children, youth, families and adults of the congregation. We are associated with 11 programmes.

Children: Church School is the primary focus of the CD committee. In January 2005 we introduced the Firelight curriculum as a planning resource. We have many Church School teachers who are supporting the church school programming over the past year. The Church school is open to children between preschool and 11 years of age. We use the rotation model in which the children are grouped with their age peers and rotate through a series for learning centres - typically craft, drama and games, food and science, pencil and paper and computer activities - over a 3 or 4 week series exploring a bible story through the different centres. On most Sundays the Church School begins with a full group session to learn, sing songs and explain the morning activities. Throughout the year, activity packs are provided at the back of the church for those children who remain in church and like to have a quiet activity to focus their attention.

The Nursery: Youth leaders staff the Nursery. They attend to the youngest members of our congregation, those under 3 years of age, while their parents are in church.

Youth: We have two Youth Groups: the Junior Youth Group is open to children in grades 4 to 6. The Senior Youth Group is for children in grades 7 to 12 and meets regularly on Sundays.

Family: The Christian Development Committee sponsors pot luck suppers throughout the year. The setting is informal and families come together to share a meal, play games and meet other folks. Each September we participate in a weekend family camp at Camp Kidston.
